Diana McCarty was born and raised in New Mexico, she has lived in Europe since 1993 – in Budapest in the 90s and Berlin in the 2000s. She is a co-founder of the faces mailing list (with Valie Djordjevic, Kathy Rae Huffman and Ushi Reiter) and a happy collaborator of the Prologue: New Feminism New Europe project. A lot of her work is with free cultural radio networks. In 2009, it is herbstradio.org and hausradio.de. Recent projects are backyardradio.de and Art Radio, an exhibition at Cornerhouse, Manchester. In the past, her projects included Radio 1:1, Reboot.fm and Juniradio. (with Pit Schultz and Guido Plonski). She is a founding member of the radia.fm network of cultural radios. Diana McCarty was part of the International Women’s University server development team, and worked to develop feminist pedagogical approaches ot learning and doing technology (with Seda Gürses, Barbara Schelkle, Prof. Heidi Schelhowe, and Heiki Pisch). In the mid-nineties, she co-founded the Nettime Mailing list and as part of the Media Research Foundation, co-organized the MetaForum Conference Series in Budapest (with Geert Lovink, Janos Sugar and Katalin Timar), and ran the Southwest Film Centre. Her main interests are exploiting social and technological systems for cultural use; i.e. piracy and open source software development for real life.
