Călin Dan was born in Arad, Romania and currently lives and works based in Amsterdam. With a background in Art History and Theory, he is an artist combining in his work both research and free invention, developing projects that bring together social concerns with aspects of entertainment and pop culture. As Artistic Director of the Soros Centre for Contemporary Art Bucharest in the 1990s, Călin introduced video and computer as work instruments to the local art scene, encouraging a direct involvement of artists with community oriented projects. As a founding member of the art group subREAL, he explored the complex heritage of the previous period, defined in Romania by a specific mixture of nationalism and late Stalinism in the beginning of the 90s. From the mid 90s he moved on into the exploration of more general themes such as archives, data bases, interactivity and physical interfaces. A veteran of b/w photography and of absurdist performance, Călin received international acclaim for his photos and videos from the series Emotional Architecture, where he explores the delicate in-balance between people and their habitat. Călin’s work has been showcased in international film festivals (Osnabrück, Oberhausen, Rotterdam), art biennales (Venice, Sao Paolo, Istanbul, Berlin, Sydney), art museums and galleries in Europe, the USA and Australia. In 2000, he received the media prize of the Split Film festival, and in 2001 was awarded the prize of Videonale Bonn. His work is in various public collections throughout Europe and is distributed by Video Data Bank, Chicago.
